The Monument
Seller: Wagon Tongue Books, Linden, AB, Canada
Seller rating 2 out of 5 stars
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good +. B/W Photographs (illustrator). SUBTITLED : ` Art, Vulgarity and Responsibility in Iraq '. In August of 1989 a sculpture was unveiled in Baghdad, Iraq. It was created by Khalid al-Rahal and Mohammed Ghani. It consists of cast, crossed swords - each 20 metres in length. It symbolizes an Iraqi victory over Iran. LEARN more about : Abbasid Period, Ba'thi, arabesque geometry, mashrabiyya, Faik Hasan, Turath, Rifa'at Chadirchi, Qadisiyya, prayer-hall, viewing stand, constitution, schizophrenia, officialdom, and Saddam Husain. The author of these 153 pages examines the interplay between art and propaganda. Not just in this piece, but throughout his native culture - and as far removed as Andy Warhol. Plenty of illustrations - often critical of political positions. Cond : Paper wrapper is two full page colour photographs. One of the hand that holds the sword and the other (back cover) of a Saddam Husain propaganda poster. Spine fine, colours bright. No names, light general wear. No tears nor marks. Collectible art criticism. ! ! Quote (p. 11) : " ._._. would be in the same spirit as having him inaugurate the monument by riding under it on a white stallion. The horse is a key symbol of Arab male pride, and whiteness signifies purity. But, more importantly, as every Shi'ite knows ._._._. . " Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 011699
