From the Author

The Beginning and the Now of AIDS Literature
As we approach the end of the second decade of AIDS, there is more and more writing about the epidemic, about what it means to gay life and culture, about its impact beyond gay circles. It would be harder to put this volume together today than it was earlier in the decade. In a sense, though, many of the issues at stake even now are discussed in this volume: moralistic interpretations of disease and sexual life, displaced notions of what it means to "cure" a disease, misinformation and the depth of prevailing assumptions HIV, and the role of writers as respondents to one of the most important health crises of the 20th century. Though AIDS literature is now several "generations" old, this volume remains essential to theorizing its many and contested meanings.
