About the Author:

MITCHELL G. ASH is Professor of Modern History, Head of the Working Group in History of Science, and Speaker for the PhD Program 'The Sciences in Historical, Philosophical and Cultural Contexts' at the University of Vienna, Austria. He is also a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. His publications include: Forced Migration and Scientific Change (edited with A. Söllner, 1996); German Universities Past and Future: Crisis or Renewal? (sole editor, 1997); Geisteswissenschaften im Nationalsozialismus. Das Beispiel der Universität Wien (Humanities under Nazism: The Case of the University of Vienna) (Edited with Wolfram Nieß and Ramon Pils, 2010).

JAN SURMAN received his PhD in History from the University of Vienna in 2012 and was a Research Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science in 2011. He worked at the PhD Program, 'The Sciences in Historical Context' at the University of Vienna and was Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for History of Science, Berlin; the Center for Austrian Studies, University of Minnesota; the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw; and the Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities, Prague. His publications include: Dwa życia Ludwika Gumplowicza. Wybór tekstów. (edited with Gerald Mozetič, 2010). He is currently a Research Fellow at the Herder Institute in Marburg, Germany.
