The Chinese, or junk, rig is particularly suitable for small boats and for shorthanded or family sailing in open water and unpredictable weather, being extremely seaworthy and easy to handle. In this volume, the authors have synthesized 25 years of research and development of this style of rig, as adapted to Western craft. The book examines the rig itself, its design, the aerodynamic theory behind junk rigs and how best to sail them. It is written equally for the amateur owner and the professional designer who wishes to study the rig in detail, understand the principles that underlie it and discover how to design a junk rig for any type of boat.

'Blondie' Hasler was awarded the OBE for his services in Norway in 1940. He invented the modern yacht wind vane self-steering gear; founded the Single-handed Transatlantic Race in 1960 (in which he finished second in his junk-rigged Jester), and the Round Britain Race and did a great deal of developmental work on the Chinese junk rig for yachts. He died in 1987. Major Jock McLeod joined Hasler as a partner in 1963. He currently sails Ron Glas, his 47-foot junk rigged schooner and has made six Atlantic crossings in her, two of them in single-handed races.
