A collection of letters, translated from the German, which were inspired by Rilke's visit in 1907 to the memorial exhibition of Cezanne's paintings held at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. The letters were written to his wife Clara and comment on Van Gogh and Rodin as well as Cezanne.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1975-1926), one of Germany's greatest lyrical poets, was born in Prague. He studied literature and the history of art in Munich and Berlin, and lived for some time in Paris where he was a secretary to the sculptor Rodin. He died in Switzerland.
