The outline of Mount Olivet swells up in the form of a crescent, to the east of Jerusalem, just across the Valley of Jehoshaphat, where its base commences, which is about one hundred and fifty yards from the city walls. At the foot of the mountain, opposite St. Stephen's Gate, three roads radiate up over its sides. The right leads around the southern shoulder of the mountain to Bethany; the middle one, a mere path, up to the place of the Ascension; and the left also in the same direction, but through the village which lies on the summit. In the centre of this curve, which the outline describes, rises the tapering minaret of this little village, which from a distance looks like a pretty little hamlet in a grove of trees--an impression soon dispelled by a near approach.
