Philosophy:1 Problem, Method, and Divisions.--In relation to ordinary consciousness, philosophy is not a mere intellectual luxury, nor a thing appealing to mere curiosity, but an earnest and systematic attempt to discover a solution for " those riddles by which our mind is oppressed in life, and about which we are compelled to hold some view in order really to be able to live at all." In relation to the sciences, philosophy has the task of determining the " claims of the principles underlying the different sciences (e. g., freedom and necessity underlying ethics and physics respectively), and the circuit within which they are valid, and to establish a universal view of the world possessing indubitable validity." It has at the outset to meet doubt in three forms,--(1) that of wanton scepticism, (2) that of scepticism with a motif, (3) that implied in the so-called " criticism " of the faculties.
