A diphthong in an accented syllable must have both its vowels strengthened; as, maizer, julai, naitin-gel, anei, hauzing. If a diphthong is not thus strengthened, a syllable containing a long simple vowel has the accent in preference to the diphthong; as, filain, aidial. 4. When a syllable containing a short vowel has the accent, we strengthen the consonant next following that vowel; as, omit, kimtrakt, kimtrakt, insident, landskep, antilop, maner, leter, definit, animet, agonaiz. The strengthened consonant always forms a syllable with the preceding vowel, contrary to the rules of syllabication; thus, the last five examples are divided man er, let er, def i nit, an i met, ag o naiz. In the digraphs sh, zh, ch, dh, th, and ng, both consonants must be strengthened, and both form a syllable with the preceding vowel; as, bash f ul, rosh ing, azh ur, hacli et, radii er, eth el, bang kwet, sing er. It follows from the above rules that, in designating the accented syllable, a strengthened consonant "takes precedence "; next comes a strengthened diphthong, and last, a long vowel. 5. Compound words, whether divided by a hyphen or not, follow the same rules as simple words; as, bangk-strck, man-laik, laikwaiz, haus-hold, haus-dug, leter-peper, gud-netyurd. When both the component parts contain a strengthened consonant, or both contain a strengthened diphthong, the principal accent rests on the first word, while the second word has a secondary accent (see next chapter); as, blod-vesel, bhkberi, taip-raiter.
