The author has frequently observed while visiting steam plants young men working as assistant engineers or helpers who seem anxious to fit themselves for better positions, and consequently increase of wages. These may be classified as follows : First, those who have some technical education. Such men are better able than their less fortunate companions to intelligently read the technical books and periodicals. Second, those who have had no technical education, but yet have benefited by practical experience. Third, those who have had neither technical instruction nor practical experience. It is to the last-named class that this little book will be of most use, although it should prove of value to all. While it is very difficult for beginners to learn much from reading technical books, the author believes such men will profit by studying pictures, or, to use a more familiar term, "detail drawings." The main points to be impressed upon the beginner are: First, to become familiar with the technical term used by engine builders for each part of the steam engine and governing mechanism. Second, to readily associate the term with the part itself. Third, to easily locate the position of each part in the engine. Fourth, to so impress the whole upon his mind that he will be able to clearly understand the relation that each part, movable or fixed, bears to each other part and to the whole as well as the work they should perform. To make the work easy and interesting, the author has chosen an up-to-date design in the form of an American Single Cylinder High Speed Horizontal Steam Engine, a type now in very common use.
