Excerpt: ... The visit ended, for the widow begged him to say nothing more, and, wishing him "good morning," left the room. "Well, she might as well consent," said Sir Henry, as he walked homeward, rather vexed with himself for having called at the Castle. "Such boasting, indeed! we shall see what she'll do. I'll have the children, at all events." The summer's sun again was shining brightly when the anniversary of the Captain's death arrived. It had been the saddest year of Ada's life, and she had arranged to leave the Castle on the following day. She longed for the time to come. At first she thought she never could go; but when every flower and tree which one loved hand had planted had been removed, and every loved spot had received a fair portion of tears, the charm was in some measure broken, and she was ready to depart. Yet still she lingered,--turn where she would, there was an association of some happy day gone by, and night closed around her ere she ceased to gaze upon these memorials of happier years. Poor smitten one! It was a holy love that led thee with thy little ones to shed a fond tear o'er the grave where thy heart was buried. Free from the cares of life how gladly wouldst thou have shared that resting-place; but thy children needed thee, and thy prayer to Heaven was for life to throw thy shielding arms around them, and for strength to meet thy trials. Angels carried thy heartbreathings upward, where the widow's cry is heard. Israel's God is thine, and He will be a strict witness against those who oppress thee. The morning came; the widow and her family, with a few domestics, left the Castle, and proceeded on the way to their new home which had been prepared for them.
