Not illustrated. 1904 Excerpt: ...that many individuals and many forms of the disease are apparently insusceptible to its influence, does not F so much detract from its value as a therapeutic measure, as suggest that our non-success in such cases is due to a want of more exact knowledge of the most suitable methods of its application. But even with a much more perfect knowledge, it is possible to conceive that a remedy may fail completely in producing its characteristic effect under certain conditions. The insusceptibility of many persons to the vaccine virus, or to the influence of certain drugs, is an instance of this. I have had the opportunity of treating two cases of primary carcinoma of the breast, where operation was emphatically declined by the patients. In both these cases all the usual symptoms of scirrhus were present. The hard, well defined mass, the retracted nipple and the shooting pains, were there, and in both at the beginning of treatment the mass was growing rapidly. Mrs. H. M., aged 54, sent to me for treatment by Dr. Hickman. She found a small growth in her left breast three years before. For some time it remained stationary and then suddenly commenced to grow rapidly. When I saw her, the nipple was much retracted, and the large hard mass, firmly adherent to the skin, could be felt in the breast. Two large glands were present in the axilla. From January 14th to April 2nd, I gave her daily exposures: hard tubes, a seven inch spark, six amperes at 32 volts, anode ten inches from breast. These intense ex posures, of fifteen minutes each, produced a severe dermitatis, which first showed itself on February 10th.
