In loving her, speak, do I love in vain, Tho it yields me only fantasy and pain? Tho when she passes I may gaze and nothing more, Unknowing, unbeknown forevermore? Yet may the clay aspire to win the heart Of the sculptor who designs it in his art? So I dare not even dream I would possess Trembling, lest hope should force me to confess. How then could I bear her scorning eye? Bather do I learn to clasp the sigh, And teach my famished ardor death to feign, And memory to be reconciled to pain. 'Tis enough that I may see this vision fair--And feast my soul to surfeit with despair. A SONG OF MEETING. I've found thee, love, come seek my arms. Then with eternity bedight, The night with solemn state came on, And gave me its soul to gaze upon. But Oh, I blessed its leaden flight, Yet gloom remained 'twixt heaven and me: My heart was blind, eyes could but see.
