Excerpt: ... But our purpose is to deal, not so much with the outward history of a condition of thought and feeling', as its inward history in the individual soul. We have dwelt thus much on its outward history, through a strong conviction that the outward general, and the inward particular, are most nearly related. But we proceed to speak of some of the doubts which seem to weigh on the minds of some excellent Christians, with regard to the nature of the office which as Christians they are called upon to sustain to the world, regarded as a world, not as a sphere for the exclusively spiritual seed sowing of the chureh. That truth which comes to shed a flood of light on all the world's relations, has has been caught and prisoned in an elect community, who have arrogated to themselves the sunlight which was meant for man. The moon is the church's emblem; she receives the sunlight but that she may reflect it more softly and lovingly on the world. 'Christianity addresses itself entirely to the spiritual man and his wants,' it is argued by those who seek in the name of Christ to justify their indifference to the world's social state. Yes, but the spiritual nature of man which Christianity addresses, was intended to address itself to everything with which the man has to do, and amongst the most important of those objects to which the spirit of man was intended to give its attention, the arrangements of his social life on earth must be named. "Politics" is a large word, the questions which it suggests, man has been agitating for well nigh six thousand years. The sun has risen and set on empires, has shone on glittering triumphs, or fled pallid from fields of blood, and ever it has found the sad student Man, poring over the horn-book of government, preparing the plan of fresh...
