First Edition. This UK edition preceeds the later & cheaper American edition. Hardcover cloth in very good condition, with very good dustwrapper. More images available on request. Very impressive condition overall -- RARE in this condition. 8vo. xxiii + 392pp. At the close of World War I, Winston Churchill warned of the spreading threat of Bolshevism. Just a year before, a hitherto unknown group of professional revolutionaries calling themselves Bolsheviks had seized power in Russia. Besides taking the country out of World War I, in what seemed to the Allies an act of sheer treachery, they declared their hostility to everything the Western democracies stood for. Civil war was raging in Russia, with the Allies deeply involved, however vicariously and reluctantly, in support of the several White Russian armies and factions. The intervention of the Western democracies, its origins and the course it ran before it petered out, make up one of the most confused yet fascinating episodes in the history of the 20th century. This book presents that story. Allied and Bolshevik, taking part: the politicians who made the decisions, the generals who directed the campaigns, and the ordinary men, women and children who endured the results of those political decisions and military operations.
