This is a book that in a very real sense has been forty years in the making. Essentially it seeks to define, for the general reader, the American Dream - the idea behind the United States - still a unique revolutionary experiement. To the author when a boy, the most romantic place-names he knew were Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska. He has not yet got to Omaha, but in the summer of 1925, during his first visit to the United States, when he was a very young visiting lecturer at the State University if Iowa, he spent two weeks in Kansas City. This visit was the beginning of what he describes as a powerful love-hate relation with the United States. The love-hate relationship persists. In America he thinks how much better life is in England; in England, he pines for the United States. This book is an attempt to pin down the mystery and lure of America, to define what is called in the United States ' the American Dream'. It is, in other words, Walter Allen's statement of what he conceives the United States to be about. 244 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
