By: Betty R. Mandell, Professor Emeritus, Bridgewater State College and
Barbara Schram, Professor Emeritus, Northeastern University
Basic Approach:
Known for its engaging writing style and its use of many current examples and cases of human service practitioners at work, Introduction to Human Services: Policy and Practice is one of the leading texts in the introductory human services market.
It provides complete and up-to-date coverage of social welfare programs and policies, and describes how history, politics, and the economy shape the programs. The U.S. social welfare system is compared to systems in other countries, and the authors use a strong multicultural and social systems approach that distinguishes it from other texts.

What Your Colleagues Are Saying:
“The authors do not apologize for the stand they take on issues and I appreciate this viewpoint.”
― Susan Kinsella, Brewton-Parker College
“The design and format are appealing. Students particularly like the side columns with definitions of key terms. Headings are clear and case examples grab the attention of the students.”
― Jean Batson-Turner, Illinois Valley Community College
“Cartoons are excellent! Really appeal to students and sets this textbook apart from others.”
― Donna Chaffee, SUNY New Paltz
