This is a new paperback supplement that can be used in social work and human services courses to engage students in learning skills, knowledge, and values that apply to the helping professions.
The exercises were gathered from undergraduate and graduate faculty in social work, human services, and continuing education departments. The text uses a standard “recipe” format for all the exercises, including instructor guidelines for setting up exercises and questions to elicit discussion. Following many of the exercises is a set of accompanying handouts (instructional guides, worksheets, checklists, game cards, etc.) that can be copied for distribution.
Instructors can use these exercises with their students; students can also keep and use these exercises in their practicum or when they begin their practice in the fields of social work or the human services. The final chapter, “Increasing Sensitivity,” includes exercises that sensitize students to culture, class, race, age, sexuality, disability, death and loss. This collection of “active learning” exercises is designed to provide instructors with an array of effective and enjoyable tools to encourage student involvement and learning.
