This book is intended as an introduction to some of the basic concepts and techniques of statistical inference that play an important role in the solution of problems that arise in many spheres of human activity. It is written in the hope that it will give the reader an appreciation for, and some understanding of, the statistical approach to problems faced by the administrator, the research worker, and other members of our increasingly complex society. The techniques and methods which are presented are those which are generally applicable. Methods that are primarily of interest in but a few areas of application have not been included. This book may serve as a text for a general course for those who want to know "what Statistics is all about," or who need to be familiar with at least the language and fundamental concepts of Statistics in order to achieve additional competence in their chosen fields.
