From the Back Cover

Based on years of practical experience, this hands-on book explains the principles of networking, and the TCP/IP protocols in depth. Covering both Linux and Windows, Practical TCP/IP is applicable to just about any network.

Practical TCP/IP

is the only book you’ll need to follow to ensure that your networks work. You do not need to be familiar or experienced with networking or programming to use this book. The book is split into four parts, and has a unique modular approach that facilitates in-depth and easy learning: you will be encouraged to learn by doing as well as reading. The book also includes detailed appendices that make it a desktop reference you cannot afford to be without.

This book

  • tells you how to build a network;
  • explains the why as well as the how to of network configuration
  • is extremely well illustrated with a large number of diagrams, screen shots and practical hints.
  • starts with a simple two-machine network and goes on to a full network connected to the internet with a firewall and internal routers, and DNS and e-mail servers;
  • explains the software tools you need to diagnose problems and to understand how your network is operating;
  • includes practical troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques that you can apply just about everywhere to enable you to solve problems in your own network and in systems configured by others;
  • assumes that things don’t always work first time. Error messages are explained and solutions provided to problems that you may encounter;
  • ties together the various networking components so that the network can be viewed as a whole rather than as disjointed pieces;

After reading this book, you will have a working network, an understanding of what is happening at a detailed level, be able to diagnose and fix problems, and also the ability to identify bugs in the software you are using.

Quote:

‘It does exactly what it says on the box – practical TCP/IP – and more. This book builds up a picture of how and (more important) why an IP network should be administered. Perhaps its most distinguishing feature is its scope. Because this book gives the full, end-to-end operational detail, it is ideal for anyone who is concerned with delivering and supporting real services.

This book adds to the current reference bank by illustrating IP networks rather than just explaining them.’

Mark Norris, Telecomms Consultant and author.
