Synopsis
Networks and distributed computer systems are becoming critical to the functioning of many organizations. As these systems become larger and more complex the issue of how to manage them becomes more and more difficult.
Written by distinguished experts from both industry and academia, Network and Distributed Systems Management is a complete reference on network management. It covers current practice and future directions for managing networks and distributed systems.
The book discusses:
- The enabling network and distributed system technologies
- Models and standards for management including OSI, SNMP and TMN;
- Practical aspects of implementing management by using concepts such as dynamic configuration,databases, graphical user interfaces and artificial intelligence
- Research and future directions concerning issues such as large-scale, inter-organizational distributed systems, specifying management policy and managing multimedia systems.
- Also included are case studies such as DEC's Enterprise Management Architecture, OSF's DME Framework and MetaAccess' development tools.
Audience
Network and Distributed Systems Management is intended to be used by: - Systems managers to determine the techniques and standards available for managing their systems. This will give them the basis for formulating their enterprise requirements, understanding what vendors have to offer, and asking the right questions
- Network and system management vendors to understand the benefits and limitations of current standards in the hope of influencing them to use modern distributed processing techniques for implementing their management products
- Students, computing professionals and researchers to learn about and obtain information about the important concepts and issues related to management of networks and distributed systems.
The impetus for this book comes from the series of International Symposia on Integrated Network Management (ISINM) and from workshops on Distributed Systems Operations and Management (DSOM), sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
The authors are all experienced practitioners or researchers invited to contribute a chapter relevant to their particular expertise. They come from computer vendors, telecommunications suppliers, software houses, research institutions and academia in the USA, Europe and Japan.
