The over-riding concept of this book to help network managers make sense of the myriad of data available from network equipment. We focus on using network management data in a practical manner to accomplish the five goals of network management: fault, configuration, performance, accounting, and security. After the reader understands the goals of network management we then focus on the protocols to retrieve network management data (SNMP, SNMPv2, and CMIS/CMIP). In the later chapters, we give specific formulas for using MIB objects in RFC1213 (MIB-2) and RFC1757 (RMON MIB) used to perform the functions of network management.
