Synopsis

A foundation of Mac programming is the code resource - whole chunks of code that are used in any common Macintosh application and can be re-used with little or no modification. The advent of the Power PC has created the need to convert existing code, now called fragments, for the new processor. This work sets out to fulfil that need. Rather than simply gathering and indexing chunks of this code, the author provides thorough explanations to teach intermediate and advanced Mac programmers more about how the whole Macintosh system functions. Programming for both 680X0 and PowerPC environments are covered and compared.

From the Back Cover

Before the PowerPC they were called code resources; now they're called code fragments. For years programmers have shared this 680x0 code freely with one another, resulting in a rich assortment of mature code that begs to be collected. The advent of the PowerPC has created the additional need to convert existing code, in order to perform the same functions (with added speed) on the new processor. A Fragment of Your Imagination fulfills this need and more, providing the most complete and up-to-date reference for any Macintosh programmer interested in writing code resources and code fragments for the Macintosh and Power Macintosh. Rather than simply gathering and indexing chunks of this vital code, the author provides thorough explanations to teach intermediate to advanced Macintosh programmers more about how the Macintosh system functions as a whole.

A Fragment of Your Imagination provides intermediate programmers with information and example code that are of utmost importance in mastering the Power Macintosh architecture. Advanced programmers will find valuable information as well, including techniques used to structure and build fat, safe fat, and accelerated code resources for use on both 680x0 and Power Macintosh. Not only will you learn how to write these awesome bits of code, but you'll also find out how to make them scream in native mode on a Power Macintosh. There are complete explanations and examples for the most popular types of code, including:

  • List definitions (LDEF)
  • Control definitions (CDEF)
  • Window definitions (WDEF)
  • Control panels (cdev)
  • System extensions (INIT)
  • Components (thng)
  • Photoshop filters
  • HyperCard XCMDs (XCMD, XFCN)
  • and many, many more.
All of the source code and a free version of MetroWerks CodeWarrior (tm) Lite are on the enclosed CD-ROM.

A Fragment of Your Imagination is an indispensable reference for all Macintosh and Power Macintosh programmers!
