Economics is a highly successful text that has established itself as a market leader around the globe. The text is known and respected for its comprehensive coverage of introductory economics, the clarity of exposition, its lively applied sections and the high quality of its four-colour artwork.

The central goal of the third edition is to present the core concepts of a principles economics course, and to use those principles to explain the key issues and problems facing the UK and other European economies in the 1990's.

Review

The new edition clearly combines the twin virtues of accumulated learning-by-doing with up-to-dateness. The book is in serious colour, with many diagrams and figures. It backs up the basic expositional highway with interesting stop-offs and scenic diversions.

A lot of work has gone into this book and it shows. Its coverage is comprehensive; almost any first year course could be accommodated using this text.

(Professor Huw Dixon, Professor of Economics at University of York)

Economics Fifth Edition

Economics is a highly successful textbook, which is known and respected world-wide for its comprehensive coverage of introductory economics, its clarity of exposition, its lively applications and examples and for the quality of its four-colour artwork. This fifth edition brings the subject powerfully to life in the 21st century and accurately reflects and encompasses the constantly shifting economic world around us.

Building on the high standards set by previous editions, this fifth European edition has been carefully revised and continues to place great emphasis on helping the student understand the core concepts of economics and think like an economist, as well as apply the fundamental principles of the discipline in a business context. Recognizing that students often find economics difficult, the authors write for the student, putting economics into practice, illuminating theory with real-world problems and issues and making the subject accessible, relevant and exciting.

Key features

  • Superb four-colour artwork shows clearly ‘where the economic action is’
  • Reading between the lines articles encourage students to build their practical thinking skills
  • Interviews with leading European economists show how economics is practised today
  • Economics in History sections trace the evolution of path-breaking economic ideas
  • The careful pedagogical plan complements and reinforces classroom learning

New to this edition

  • Totally new twinned-question ‘parallel’ problems, linked in to the Econ 100 website, allow students to work through questions and answers, whilst also setting aside an answer-protected bank of questions for lecturers.
  • Extra critical problems, carefully chosen to have a UK and European focus, involve students in active learning using the website.
  • Extensive revision of Reading Between the Lines sections places this excellent feature in an even wider European and international context.
  • New business-related case studies in the micro section give the text an even more practical and international focus.

Excellent text-and-technology package to enhance teaching and learning includes:

  • Publisher resource website at http://www.booksites/parkin for access to Economics in Action for students, lecturer downloads and quick links to the Econ 100 website.
    • Econ 100 website. Visit this unrivalled, topical site at http://www.econ100.com for weekly Reading Between the Lines news articles and quizzes, conversations in The Economics Café with Michael Parkin and students world-wide, and much more.
    • Economics in Action This superb interactive economics software is now available, fully updated, on-line to students who buy the text. A wealth of exciting features - including interactive graphs and drawing facilities, figure galleries, quizzes and exam preparation questions - help drive home the fundamentals of economic theory, show how changing conditions cause curves to shift, and help with preparation for exams.
  • Instructor resource CD-ROM containing Instructor’s Manual, powerpoint slides and a testbank of questions.
