Synopsis
Napolean's army was the wonder of his age, for the France of his day was the first of the modern nations in which whole peoples were conscripted for war. The man in the ranks is paramount here. As weapons grow more deadly his uniforms become drab and sober, and his ranks are spaced more widely. Engulfed in the trenches he is on the move again, faster still, in the modern mechanized airbourne age. Graphic drawings and words depict their kit, food, accommodation and pay leading to the skilled soldier-mechanic of our own time.
