Synopsis

Students and instructors often find enormous collections of theory overwhelming and intimidating, but this collection of seminal readings in contemporary theory makes the material more accessible by addressing only the key concepts and schools of theory, including newer ones such as ecocriticism and disability studies. This volume has a strong representation of key pieces from cultural studies that many literary scholars are less familiar with but that have exerted a wide influence and can appeal to students. The introduction and headnotes are short, direct, and engagingly written, providing the footing that new readers need to engage with the primary critical texts. (Instructors who want more fulsome contextualization can pair the anthology with the author's short literary theory text How to Interpret Literature.) While it has not been possible to avoid excerpts completely, this volume eschews the tendency of anthologies of its kind to rely heavily on excerpts. Wherever practical, it includes selections (essays, articles, or chapters) in their entirety, despite the comparative brevity of the volume overall. An end-of-book glossary helps illuminate unfamiliar terms.
Message: The unbearable heaviness of critical theory made lighter in a shorter, fresher anthology that can stand alone or be paired with How to Interpret Literature.
