Synopsis
Murphy on Evidence is now firmly established as a leading text for use on law degree courses and in preparation for professional examinations. It bridges the gap between the academic and practical treatment of the law of evidence containing both a comprehensive academic analysis of the law and a wealth of practical information about how the law is applied in the courtroom This ninth edition has been fully revised to deal with the many significant changes that have taken place since the publication of the last edition. In particular, this edition deals with the evidential provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 and the Sexual Offences Act 2003. The former has produced profound changes in the law of hearsay and character evidence, and has affected the law in other important areas. Among the many new cases dealt with are Johnstone and Attorney-General's Reference (No.1 of 2004) ; Jones and Petkar; Ashworth Hospital Authority v. MGN Ltd ; Elleray; R (CPS) v. Bolton Magistrates' Court and Mawdesley v. Chief Constable of Cheshire Constabulary; Alkaitis; Z (confessions, meaning of 'adverse'); Collins, Webber and Knight.

About the Author
Peter Murphy is a member of the bars of England, California, and Texas, and is Professor of Law, South Texas College of Law. He has taught and practised at the bar extensively both in England and the United States, and has served as counsel at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. He is the editor-in-chief of Blackstone's Criminal Practice and the co-author of Evidence and Advocacy and Cases and Materials on Evidence.
