Oxford Specialty Training is a major new series aimed at postgraduate trainees, taking into account the training structures and syllabuses newly introduced by the Modernising Medical Careers intiative. About the Author

Professor Mark Gardiner graduated from Cambridge in 1969, and trained at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School. He has been involved in Paediatrics for more than 34 years, becoming the Professsor of Paediatrics at Royal Free and University College Medical School in 1991. In this educational role, he has held Membership examining positions for both the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
