Synopsis

This series by the late, Professor Diego Angulo and Dr. A.E. Perez Sanchez, former Director of the Prado Museum and now Professor at the University of Madrid, is designed to provide an authoritative reference work for the relatively unknown but important field of Spanish Drawings from 1400 up to the time of Goya. Each volume catalogues a carefully defined period or School, and offers the student and the collector of Spanish art highly important study-material and illustrations, which have hitherto been inaccessible. Every volume includes an introduction, a detailed catalogue containing information about size, medium, condition and provenance of each drawing, and a corpus of illustrations. There are biographical notes for every named artist, with full bibliographies and indexes. The Andalusian city of Seville was one of the most important artistic centres of the 17th century. The period covered by this volume is dominated by Zurbaran, Francisco Pacheco and Francisco Herrera the Elder. The subject matter of the drawings catalogued here is largely religious, but Pacheco's fine portrait studies in his album of Famous Men introduce us to many leading Spaniards of his day.
