Colloid Science: Physical Chemistry of Colloidal Dispersions is the only text to provide a thorough and appealing introduction to the science of finely dispersed matter in the form of colloids.
The renowned Oxford Chemistry Primers series, which provides focused introductions to a range of important topics in chemistry, has been refreshed and updated to suit the needs of today's students, lecturers, and postgraduate researchers. The rigorous, yet accessible, treatment of each subject area is ideal for those wanting a primer in a given topic to prepare them for more advanced study or research. Moreover, cutting-edge examples and applications throughout the texts show the relevance of the chemistry being described to current research and industry.
Key Features
The learning features provided, including questions at the end of every chapter and online multiple-choice questions, encourage active learning and promote understanding. Furthermore, frequent diagrams, worked examples, margin notes, further reading, and glossary definitions all help to enhance a student's understanding of these essential areas of chemistry.

Albert P. Philipse studied chemistry, philosophy and science history at Utrecht University, and achieved his PhD (1987) in colloid science, with a thesis on light scattering from concentrated silica dispersions. At the Energy Research Center (ECN, the Netherlands) he led various projects on colloidal processing of technical ceramics and inorganic foams. In 1991 he joined the Van't Hoff Laboratory for Physical and Colloid Chemistry at Utrecht University where he was Full Professor of Physical Chemistry from 1994 until his retirement in 2023. His research focused on the synthesis, thermodynamics, and transport properties of dispersions of magnetic, non-spherical and charged colloids. He lectured on physical chemistry, thermodynamics and colloid science at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as delivering guest lectures in schools. He also taught courses in the history of chemistry. Albert's additional enthusiasms include classical music, travelling, cooking, and Ancient Greek.
