9780198741893: An Overcrowded World?: Population, Resources, and the Environment (The Shape of the World: Explorations in Human Geography)

Synopsis

This book explores the issues of resource use and depletion as well as the topic of population growth and contraction. The key interest is the impact that developments in one part of the world have upon people's lifestyles and the forms of inequality inscribed in the connections between rich and poor countries. The study of wilderness and the notion of empty space are used to introduce questions of national resources, sustainability, and ecology. Sustainability provides the framework for discussion of population change, mortality and fertility and the questions of energy resources and environmental degradation. The issue of whether or not there is a global problem of resources is addressed head on.

The book is the third in a series of five books which offers a comprehensive, broad-based introduction to human geography. The building blocks of a `geographical imagination' are presented through some of the principal forces that are shaping the world as it approaches the twentieth-first century. Each book develops different aspects of the geographical imagination, using a mixture of text and readings. The issues which are explored are at the forefront of global and economic change and are used to teach what it is to think geographically. In so doing they trace the impact of shifts in cultural and political geography.

Review

Eminently suitable for sixth-form studies. The layout of text, numerous tables, diagrams and half-tones (with the luxury of eleven colour plates) are admirably clear. Every school ought to have a copy and hopefully a cheaper paperback edition will encourage them to buy one. (Geography)

An attractive book with well-laid out tables of statistics ... through a well balanced mix of text, boxed case studies and highlighted activities, the book invites interactive study ... An excellent book to support a classroom programme of study. (Geography Matters, The Royal Geographical Society Magazine)

"eine hohe Kompetenz bei Behandlung weit ausgreifender Thematiken mit einer gut verstandlichen", Franz-Josef Kemper, Zeitschrift fur Wirtschaftsgeographie, Dusseldorf or "A high competence in the treatment of the wide-ranging themes with a well comprehensible account"

From the Back Cover

An Overcrowded World? shows that uneven development both worsens problems in particular areas and prevents a unified global response. As a result of geography, unsustainable lifestyles continue and are being extended to larger numbers of people. In that respect, the world is truly overcrowded. Because of the approachable way in which this book has been prepared, it will appeal to anyone who is keen to understand the vital issues it addresses. However, it will be particularly appropriate to both sixth-formers and undergraduates following courses in human geography and environmental studies.
