Synopsis
Wulfstan (d.1023), Archbishop of York, legislator and adviser to Ethelred, is best remembered as a skilful homilist and orator, whose sermons remained popular into the 12th century and are remarkable for their effective use of rhythms and rhetorical devices. In this, the standard critical edition of the homilies, Bethurum presents the texts of eighteen manuscripts, six in Latin and the remainder in Old English, including the famous 'Sermo in Lupi ad Anglos'. The Introduction offers a full discussion of the manuscripts, the canon, the language and style of the homilies, related manuscripts and the Worcester Glosses. Bethurum also gives a detailed account of Wulfstan's life and work and of his career as an Archbishop during what has been called "the Period of the Bishops'. Extensive notes on each homily follow the texts and the appendices include parallel text of Wulfstan's translation of Abbo's 'De Cena Domini'.
