Synopsis

The final report of excavations undertaken by the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem. The fort dates from the late fifth to early seventh centuries and was the first such fort to have been fully investigated. It was a small but strategically placed military installation which provided evidence for the late antique military system and the daily life of traders and travellers. The preservation conditions in the dry sand resulted in some remarkable finds and interesting zooarchaeological records.

Synopsis

This excavation makes a valuable contribution to our knowledge both of the military system and of daily life (especially for traders and travellers) in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods. Upper Zohar Fort is one of a number of small, but strategically significant, sites in the Northern Negev, with majestic views of the Judean Wilderness and the Arava Valley. This volume publishes a detailed account of the excavation and finds, including unequivocal evidence for the date of construction and use. Dry conditions contributed to the unusual preservation of finds, and the zooarchaeology reports by leading experts are of particular interest.
