Synopsis

The short-lived British occupation of Java (1811-16) at the end of the Napoleonic Wars marked a watershed in the modern history of Indonesia. For the first time the European government had sufficient military power to impose its will on hitherto semi-independent local rulers, and this superior force, combined with new colonial policies, led to a fundamental alteration in the political relationships on the island. This volume provides a unique insight into the Javanese view of events from the vantage point of the Central Javanese court of Yogyakarta, a court which experienced British military force at first hand in June 1812 when it was stormed by British-Indian troops.
