Synopsis
There is currently much interest in the `mouvance' of a medieval text: the way in which different manuscripts reflect its evolution to meet changing readers' needs. Ancrene Riwle (Ancrene Wisse) is ideally suited to such study. Although it began as a guide for anchoresses, composed in the thirteenth century, it addressed a wider audience, and served as a popular guide to spirituality down to the Reformation. The `Vernon' version, copied in the second half of the fourteenth century, is the last in the series of editions of individual manuscript versions to be published by EETS. The series began with the publication of the Latin text, edited by C. D'Evelyn (OS 216) in 1944, and the French text, edited by J. A. Herbert (OS 219). The first of the English texts to appear was the Nero MS, edited by M. Day (OS 225, 1952).

The new edition follows the editorial methods established by the series: the text of the MS is reproduced as it stands, without emendations. Consisting of eight parts: divine service, keeping the heart, moral lessons and examples, temptation, confession, penance, love, and domestic matters. Parts 1 and 8 are guides for the "Outer Rule", relating to the exterior life, and parts 2-7 are guides for the "Inner Rule" ,relating to interior life. The text is entirely in the Medieval Middle English of the original text. 130 pages, 5-3/4" X 9". Includes an Introduction, Editorial Method, Bibliography, these chapters are in modern English. Dust jacket is intact and has been protected with a clear, removable cover. Dark brown cloth covered boards with the title in gold on the front panel and spine. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. This is not a library discard copy. Edges of the text block are clean and the binding is tight and square.
