Synopsis
A critical edition of the Old English homilies in Vercelli, Biblioteca Capitolare MS CXVII, with parallel passages from related manuscripts. 'The need for a complete annotated edition of the prose texts in the Vercelli Book has long been evident: the book is a linchpin for our understanding of anonymous Old English prose, of crucial importance as the earliest extant collection. This need has now been admirably met by Donald Scragg's superb edition, which more than supplies all that could be hoped for from such an undertaking. Scragg performs an admirable work of summary, synthesis, and discussion, and his printing of all known direct sources at the bottom of the page facilitates comparison.
