The author gives a candid, no holds barred account of the Pakistan army. He describes its evolution, its brutal suppression of the former East Wing (now Bangladesh), the events leading to the overthrow of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1977, and other dramatic episodes in brisk and telling language.

..".[an] elegantly written book."--Times Literary Supplement
There is an updated new edition, published in February 2000.
Professor Ian Talbot reviewed the book in the Times Literary Supplement and disagreed with a lot of my opinions but also said that it was "elegantly written" and that the descriptions of the wars were "military history at its best." I think you will find that the new edition is a good read, as it describes events from the resignation of General Karamat (with personal recollections from him) to the Kargil affair, and then, at the last moment, the army takeover on October 12 1999. There is a lot of new information, and I hope you enjoy reading the book.
