The idea of "development", especially in the last few decades, has been closely identified with progress, modernity and emancipation. It also acquired an aura of indisputable inexorability. This work argues that this this view is misleading and that development is a label masking plunder and violence. It demonstrates these points by using case studies and shows that there are viable alternatives to such forms of progress. This is a companion volume to Nandy's "Science, Hegemony and Violence", and focuses on one of the issues presented in the earlier volume.
