Synopsis

Edward (E.J.) Thompson first met Rabindranath Tagore on the day the poet learned he had won the Nobel Prize in 1913, and became closely involved with him and his circle during the preparation of "Rabindranath Tagore: Poet and Dramatist", the first major English-language study of his writings. Drawing on his father's letters and journals, eminent historian E.P. Thompson not only traces their stormy friendship, but also offers fresh insights into Anglo-Indian relations in the first quarter of this century.

Review

Dr Thompson has written a surprisingly detached and objective study in Alien Homage. The correspondence he had recently unearthed does provide a highly interesting picture of what he inelegantly calls the "interface" between Bengali and British cultures, especially before and after the last turn of the century. (Times Literary Supplement)

It is the great achievement of E.P. Thompson's book that it so credibly contest that too predictable model. Thompson pere in fact emerges from `Alien Homage' as a highly complex figure, ... a deeply challenging intervention in current debates about the nature of colonial literary cultures. (R.J. Dingley. University of New England, New South Wales. Notes and Queries)
