Shahid Javed Burki was educated at St. Mary's Academy, Rawalpindi; Government College, Lahore; Christ Church, University of Oxford; Kennedy School and Department of Economics, Harvard University; and Harvard Business School. He joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1960 and received a Rhodes Scholarship in 1961. In 1967 he was selected as Mason Fellow at Harvard University. In 1974, he joined the World Bank as Senior Economist and stayed with the organization until he took early retirement in 1999. He held several senior executive positions at the World Bank including Director, International Relations Department (1984-7); Director, China Department (1987-94)); and Vice President, Latin America and the Caribbean (1994-9). He was Finance Minister of Pakistan in 1996-7. From 1999-2004 he was in the private sector as Chief Executive Officer of EMP Financial Services, a Washington-based consulting group. He now serves on the boards of EWV, Washington; Netsol Technologies, California; Education Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey. He writes a weekly column for Dawn, Pakistan's largest-circulation English-language newspaper. He also contributes to the op-ed pages of theFinancial Times, London and the Asian Age, Delhi.
