The birth of Aphrodite, the Trojan Horse, Zeus disguised as a swan. These and other classical myths and legends are usually encountered separately, but together they make up a coherent, multigenerational saga of epic battles, bizarre metamorphoses, immortal heroes, and all-too-human gods-a fantastic world recognizably real to its audience. Classical Mythology offers newcomers and long-time enthusiasts new ways to navigate the world of Greek and Roman myths, beginning by exploring the landscapes where the myths are set. It then provides a richly detailed timeline of mythic episodes from the origin of the cosmos to the end of the Heroic Age-plus an illustrated mythological dictionary listing significant characters, places, events, objects, and concepts.
Whether you wish to explore the world that gave rise to ancient mythology or research a specific piece of the whole, this handbook is the best introduction available to an extraordinary cast of characters (gods, nymphs, satyrs, monsters, heroes) and the natural and supernatural stages upon which their fates are played out. Features · A detailed timeline serves as a convenient "episode guide" chronicling events described in classical mythology · A comprehensive A-Z section offers a quick way to identify the gods, mortals, events, and objects that are key to specific myths and legends

Original brochure. Condition: Gut. 393 p., w/ pictures. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Minimally scuffed binding, otherwise in very good condition. - Content: Like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings or the fictional Old West or feudal Tapan in samurai films, classical mythology consists not only of a corpus of stories but also of a world, one with a geography and a history as well as relationships and rules and narrative conventions. Whereas most works on classical mythology focus their attention on the stories, neglecting the world in which they are situated, the present book explores both elements in an effort to give each its due. The result is a sort of ethnography of the imaginary. Accordingly, I treat classical mythology as a largely self-contained system that can be enjoyed and appreciated as such, an approach that is possible because the ancient mythological narratives transpire in a fairly consistent world in terms of setting, characters, and conventions, even when the texts in which they are preserved are centuries apart in date, for despite an increase in geographical knowledge and a less earnest attitude toward the gods on the part of sophisticated persons, later mythographers retain the largely fabulous physical world of early Greek narrators and continue to retail essentially the same myths and legends. An acquaintance with other aspects of classical culture such as literature, art, religion, history, philosophy, science, and the Greek and Latin languages will deepen one's understanding of classical mythology, but an appreciation of its story-world should be the first step. Although the present book stands by itself as an introduction to classical mythology, it can also serve as a supplement to other modern works on classical mythology or as a companion to accompany the reading of ancient authors of mythologically rich works such as Homer, Hesiod, the composers of the Homeric Hymns, the Greek tragedians, Apollodoros, and Ovid. In writing this book I have benefited from the inspiration of many persons in the present and the past, of whom I wish to mention my wife, Mary Beth, and two friends with a passion for myth, Alexander (Luke) Russell and Gregory Schrempp. ISBN 9780195300352 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 563.
