This book provides a comprehensive analysis of China's booming rural non-state (collective and private) industrial sector. The main topics covered in the nineteen papers include the performance, efficiency, ownership, and institutional structures, employment and wage systems, and regional structure of China's rural industrial sector. The papers are based on a collaborative research project between Chinese and World Bank researchers in which detailed information at the national and provincial level and for four representative countries, 63 townships, 122 rural industrial firms, and 1,174 workers was collected and processed.

"This is clearly a significant book. It is the first comprehensive study of China's TVP sector based on systematic empirical evidence. The survey data collected as part of the project are extremely comprehensive and basically reliable. The topics covered in the book, such as ownership, labor, efficiency, the role of governments, and comparative perspectives, are both theoretically and practically important and relevant."--The Journal of Asian Studies"No short review can do justice to the multifacted information and analysis contained in this tome....[It] is not just a books for China scholars of development and social change in general, it is also wonderful food for thought for government officials who are suspicious of initiatives from below."--Peasant Studies"This volume contains a vast amount of information about China's rural industry. China watchers as well as students of rural development will find the book useful and interesting....an important contribution to the growing literature on post-reform China."--Asian-Pacific Economic Literature"A thorough study of rural industry in China that consistently keeps the historical setting and the impact of varying policies in perspective."--Eastern Economic Journal"[A] well-integrated collection.... The book presents a rich set of readings....A standard reference on TVPs."--The China Quarterly
