Marked by extraordinary research, enhanced by 100s of musical illustrations, these volumes cover Verdi's operas from "Oberto" to "Falstaff". VOLUME I traces the organic growth & development of the composer's style from 1839 to 1851--from the first opera "Oberto" to the 17th "Rigoletto". Budden examines ea. opera in detail, w/ a full account of its dramatic & historical origins & a brief critical evaluation. More than 350 musical examples point to the significance of the early operas in Verdi's developing style. VOLUME II covers those works written during the decadence of the post-Rossini period. During this time, Verdi, having exhausted the vein of simple lyricism to be found in "Il Trovatore" & "La Traviata", achieved self-renewal in direct confrontation w/ the masters of the Paris Opera w/ his "Les V epres Siciliennes". A new scale & variety of musical thought can be sensed in the Italian operas that follow, culminating in "La Forza del Destino". VOLUME III covers roughly a quarter of a century, which saw grand opera on the Parisian model established throughout Italy, the reform of the Conservatories, & the spread of cosmopolitan influences to an extent that convinced many that Italian music was losing its identity. Verdi produced his last four & greatest operas ("Don Carlos", "Aida", Otello", & "Falstaff") in this period, which ended w/ the advent of "verismo", in which a new recognizably Italian idiom was inaugurated. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "Will long remain the DEFINITIVE history of the 28 Verdi operas, together w/ an ANALYTICAL-DESCRIPTIVE account of them all which is certainly the most DETAILED, SOPHISTICATED, & ACUTE that is available, by a large margin, in any language. A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT." -Joseph Kerman, NYTRB "The book towers above all others in English on any aspect of Verdi." -Robert Craft, NYRB "INDSPENSABLE for anyone performing, attending, or writing about Verdi's operas." -David Rosen, MLA Notes "All of us in the field would have loved to have written a study like this." -Harold Schonberg, NYT * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: JULIAN BUDDEN was for 7 years External Services Music Organizer in the B.B.C. and for the 5 years previous was Chief Producer, Opera, for radio. He was a member of the editorial board for the critical edition of all of Verdi's works undertaken by the house of Ricordi in collaboration w/ the University of Chicago Press. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & packages this fine 3-volume set w/ our greatest elegance & care for FREE shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL within the United States & its territories or via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below cost fee of $16.00 w/ shipping to all international destinations via Mandatory USPS PRIORITY MAIL w/ our below-cost rates available on request.
