This study provides the first comprehensive review of pattern formation in ciliates, along with an analysis of general mechanisms of pattern formation. The author emphasizes the integrative mechanisms that encompass the entire cell surface, and pays particular attention to genetic and non-genetic mirror-image reversals of asymmetry. A conceptual model for large-scale intracellular organization is included. The perspective derived from ciliate studies is applied to the early development of multicellular organisms, particularly embryos of Drosophila. The book will be accessible to developmental biologists with no prior familiarity with ciliates.
