Francis Dauer has rethought the framework for teaching reasoning in general and formal logic in particular, the desired epistemological context, and the role of fallacies. Utilizing natural deduction in the propositional calculus to achieve coherence and applied epistemology as a means of assessing truth, Dauer presents methods for assessing argumentative passages - in both the demonstrative and non-demonstrative modes. Organized so advanced topics can be easily bypassed, the book includes a systematic discussion of language and its various levels of meaning, a brief presentation of expected utilities, an introduction to probability theory and a short discussion of quantification structures.
