About the Author

Vaughan Williams has come to be regarded as one of the finest British composers of the 20th century. He has a particularly wide-ranging catalogue of works, including choral works, symphonies, concerti, and opera. His searching and visionary imagination, combined with a flexibility in writing for all levels of music-making, has meant that his music is as popular today as it ever has been. Michael Kennedy is a writer and journalist, who was chief music critic of the Sunday Telegraph from 1989-2005. As a writer he is particularly well known for acute and sympathetic studies of the works of Vaughan Williams (who was during his last years a close friend) and Elgar. He is the author of the Oxford Dictionary of Music and Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music. Michael Kennedy was made an OBE in 1981 and a CBE in 1997.
