International Human Resource Management is a new edition of this market-leading text. Two new authors, Marion Festing and Allen Engle, make this new edition even more international than its predecessors. Changes include more coverage of small & medium enterprises, new material on managing diversity and cross-cultural workforces, new material on off-shoring, particularly to India or China, and a new chapter on sustaining global growth and linking the international HR function more firmly to companys' strategic growth plans. In addition the new edition includes a wealth of case study material and class discussion material. A full instructor's website is available to adopters.

Written by authors with international experience this comprehensive resource contains international research and examples, and should also appeal to a US audience. The text focuses on the choices that confront multinational enterprises in international human resource management and some factors to consider in making those choices.Review:
"Two major events in the field of international human resource management (IHRM) took place in 1990. The first was the founding of the International Journal of Human Resource Management (IJHRM) by Michael Poole [...] the second major event of 1990 for IHRM was the publication, by Peter Dowling and Randall Schuler, of the first textbook on IHRM, which had as its main focus, HR in multinational corporations.
International Human Resource Management: Managing People in a Multinational Context(2008) is now in its 5th edition [the current author team consists of Peter Dowling, Marion Festing, and Allen Engle Sr.] and the IJHRM felt that the time was right to take stock of the text book and its role in the IHRM field.
In summary, while maintaining a consistent focus over time, there have also been important changes in the content and structure of the Dowling et al. book. These changes capture changes in the IHRM field over the years and have also served to help push the IHRM field to recognize these changes and their importance. Despite the growth in scope (and pages), it is worth noting that the Dowling et al. book continues to be very clear, concise, and accessible. Headings, exhibits, boxed examples, and colours are used to very good effect and together with the excellent writing, make for a highly readable book.
The 5th edition provides an excellent mix of conceptual models, empirical research, and application. The models and research are very effectively translated into clear and straightforward language and often driven home with examples, which appear throughout the book. The very thorough use and referencing of the research literature means that this book is also a wonderful resource for scholars and, as a service to any PhD student studying for comprehensive exams in IHRM, my advice would be to start with this book. In terms of the undergraduate and MBA classroom, the applications bring the scholarly concepts and evidence to life." -- The International Journal of Human Resource Management, October 2008
