This balanced account of Japanese history pays attention to developments in art, religion, literature and thought as well as economic, political and social history. The author, who has studied and conducted research at The Kyoto University Institute for Humanistic Studies since 1967, offers a clear, consistent, and highly readable style that is accessible to students with no previous knowledge of Japan. Numerous illustrations, maps and timelines, and suggested readings lead the student to further study.
