From the Author

A Little Can Mean A Lot
About 1962 I applied for membership in the American Psychological Association, and was granted membership. I then applied to Division 2 of APA and received a form from T. L. Engle.

The name "T.L. Engle" rang a LOUD bell with me! He had cost me a letter grade on a term paper, "Psychology in the High School," in the mid 1950's at the University of Alabama. My professor, Dr. Tenant Lee, had written in "A---" on the paper, crossed it out, and wrote "B+," because I used the name "Engle" too many times - Engle was the major person who dealt with this area of psychology at that time.

When I submitted my application for membership in Division 2, I asked Dr. Engle if he was the one interested in psychology at the secondary level - his answer is obvious.

Over the years Roy and I wrote to each other, and at an APA meeting in Washington, D.C. several years later, we finally met. Roy asked me if I would be interested in becoming his co-author on the 5th edition of his text (published in 1969). My answer was "YES!!!!" The original edition was published in 1945.

I personally believe that Dr. Lee changing my grade on that term paper was responsible for my remembering Roy's name. Changing the grade was a very minor thing at the time, but in the long run it resulted in major changes in my life. Some forty-five years later, I still have that term paper on the bookshelf in my office at home. It is priceless! The textbook started by Roy in 1945 and with nine revisions is over fifty years old. In the book business this is an extremely long time.
