Each day on his way to school, Trigg is confronted by a troll who demands money to cross the bridge. But Trigg gets an idea. He and the troll will ask riddles. If Trigg wins, he can cross the bridge for free. The plan works the first time, but the next day the toll-bridge troll again demands to be paid. Trigg can't ask a riddle every day.
