Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First US Edition. Type: Remainder First Printing. Hardcover Book in Very Good Condition with a Good Dust Jacket in a clear archival protective cover. Translated from the French by Donald M. Frame. Marte consists of letters discovered in the 1970s in the attic of a French chateau; they were written between 1892-1902 and draw a vivid portrait of the petite noblesse, the landed gentry who considered themsleves a separate class until WW I swept away that type of life. The letters sketch an age and a class that mistakes formalism for religion and conformity for honor--it reads like a 19th century novel. Binding of grey half cloth gilt lettered over pink boards which are very clean and unmarked with some darker shading over the lighter pink. Remainder mark on lower edge. The jacket is clean and unmarked, slight edgewear on bottom edge; upper edge is torn and chipped around spine head and corner, one chip on upper edge. Jacket with protective clear archival cover. 362 pages. 6.25 x 9.4 inches. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishers, Orlando, Florida 1984. Seller Inventory # 012733
